This Salak palm is native to lowland rainforests on the Malay Peninsula to 700 m (2300 ft.). It forms a densely clustering, usually underground stem that gives rise to many tall, ascending, plumose leaves with narrow, clustering leaflets and spiny leaf bases. The large, pear-shaped fruits are covered in snakeskin-like scales and are a sought-after delicacy. In cultivation it does best in a tropical climate under an established canopy.

Salacca glabrescens, its native habitat is found near streams or swarms in the warm, wet tropical, lowland rainforest in Thailand and Peninsular Malaysia. It shares similar agroecological requirements with other Salacca species.

Salak glabrescens is round in shape with a pointed tip, the color of the fruit skin is reddish with fine spines. The characteristic of glabrescens salak that differentiates it from other salaks is that the length of the fruit stalk reaches 60 – 100 cm.
The red color of the fruit skin will begin to appear at four months after pollination, and will ripen a month later. When it is young, the skin color of the glabrescens snake fruit is the same as snake fruit in general. The diameter of the snake fruit glabrescens is 3.2–4.2 cm. Fruit production per tree from three to eight dompol. One dompol consists of 20 – 40 pieces. The main fruit harvest is in November and April. The flesh contains 1 – 3 jurings with a diameter of 2.8 – 3.7 cm, white brown in color, soft texture, with a sweetness level of 10° – 12° brix, flesh thickness of 1.2 – 1.5 cm, with a very sour taste .
