Blood Star Fruit / Mugi Fruit


Star fruit has the scientific name Baccaurea angulata (Euphorbiaceae). Carambola is endemic to the island of Borneo. The people know them as red starfruit, hill starfruit, gerumin bereh (Bidayuh), red tampoi, uchong (Iban), forest starfruit, pidau (Indonesia); embaling (Sabah) and embaling bobou (Brunei). Carambola blood is closely related to sweet starfruit (Averrhoa carambola-Oxalidaceae).

This plant lives in primary or secondary forests not far from the banks of rivers on the island of Borneo. The tree grows in shade on sandy or lateritic soils up to 800 m asl.

The blood starfruit tree reaches a height of 21 m, the leaves are elliptical or oval in shape. Flowers are yellow, fruit is reddish and tastes sweet and sour. Flower season from May to November. Fruit season occurs from November to January. Fruit emerges from the trunk and branches.

Blood starfruit contains protein, carbohydrates, fiber, minerals and vitamin C. In West Kalimantan, blood starfruit is found in many districts. Sanggau district. Sekadau, district. Sintang and Kab. Kapuas Hulu.
